Queer Dream Tarot Reflection: The Devil Reversed

The estimated read is 5 minutes.

It’s the third week of Pride, and I’m continuing to use Queer Tarot for shared collective dream tarot readings for reflection. If you’re finding this post sometime in the future, take what feels right for you.

Our Card: the Devil Reversed

The card I pulled for this week was the The Devil reversed using my Queer Tarot deck.

I shared this card first on my personal Twitch stream. Catch me streaming on Tuesday nights for Tarot Tuesday, where I dive into the meaning of the cards and share quick personal readings for interested chatters.

The Devil is a Major Arcana card, meaning it’s one of the 22 special cards in the tarot. It represents change or transformation in our lives. A shift in perspective. And in contrast to the recent movie that’s been all over my YouTube ad feed, Tarot *insert eye roll here*, it’s not a harbinger of doom and death.

In particular, it’s associated with the zodiac sign of Capricorn and the Number fifteen, which, when broken down, consists of one and five or six, being the partner card to The Lovers.

Okay, so what does that all mean exactly? One is The Magician, and five is The Hierophant. The Magician shares with us that we have all the tools we need to move forward with our journey, and the Hierophant shares that there’s been a path put down or knowledge gained that can help us to cut out what’s unimportant and focus on what we need to move forward productively and in alignment with what feels right for our soul. And together, coming together to represent six, The Lovers, we can and have made decisions that are in the interests of our own heart and love for self and others. What about the Capricorn symbolism? It’s about practically and “Doing what’s got to be done” to move forward on our path and break free from any bondage, imagery that is shared above in The Devi’s Imagery.

What about the reversal? When we see The Devil, it might mean we are acting antithetical to our success. It does show two folks bound in chains, after all. When reversed, though, there’s the feeling of breaking free from all things mental, physical, emotional, and spiritual that have been holding us back. It’s liberation and perhaps hard to accept since it means shedding what was once comfortable to us, even if it wasn’t the healthiest.

I know I can yap on and on about symbolism and signs and numbers, so here’s a short message from The Devil Reversed: You might be feeling like you’re in a different spot than before; of course, you are; you’ve come far, and grown so much over the past years. Letting go often means dropping what’s not working and choosing yourself. In doing so, you’re opening yourself up to growth; even though it might feel lonely to say “no” to what’s no longer aligned with you, it’s so you can say “yes” to opportunities that will help with your growth.

Bonus: A song that felt right for this reading is I Know a Place by Muna.

Putting the Message into Action

So, how might we practically take the reversed Devil into our lives? Here are four ways you might start to put the message for The Devil into action. Consider the below:

  1. Evaluate your Inventory. Take stock of things you own that bring you joy. Express gratitude for how far you’ve come and for what helps provide you comfort and ease in your current space.

  2. Clean out your space. Do you have items around you that represent old parts of you? Maybe they’re forgotten digital files or profiles. Update things, throw things out, donate, make space for solitude reflection, and bring in items that feel more aligned with your current direction.

  3. Exercise a practice for release. Being in a transformational time can take a toll on your whole self. Give yourself a nice bath, maybe attend a sound bath event, make time to journal, or get out excessive energy through a creative process like art making. Commemorate how far you’ve come.

  4. Check in on your relations. Check-in with yourself first, but don’t sleep on folks who have been with you in various phases of your life. People can phase in and out but now might be a good time to send a friendly hello to those who have been supportive of your journey and understand that life ebbs and flows. This could also mean making a practice or dusting off a practice of acknowledging those who have passed and support you still on the other side.

What is dream tarot?

In my previous two posts this month, I shared that dream tarot is what I’ve been calling my flavor of tarot reading. I believe our waking and sleeping dreams directly correlate to one another, and by better understanding both, we can co-create sustainable and joyful realities. I see tarot as a tool for reflecting on these dreams and helping to decipher them.

Did you enjoy this Collective Dream Tarot Reading?

I’m also seeking opportunities to do more dream tarot reading at parties and events in Austin, the greater Central Texas area, and beyond. I offer various virtual dream tarot readings, which you can see on my dream tarot page.

Visit my contact page to send me questions about hosting a yoga flow, sharing sound healing at a private or public event, or perhaps doing an in-house visit for a dream tarot reading.
